Spencer Pierce is a Professor in the School of Accountancy in the BYU Marriott School of Business. Professor Pierce recently joined BYU after spending the last twelve years at Florida State University, where he was the Jim Moran Associate Professor of Accounting. Prior to leaving FSU for BYU, he was granted promotion to Full Professor, which would have been effective in Fall 2026.
Professor Pierce completed his doctoral studies in Accounting Information and Management from Northwestern University in 2014. He earned both his undergraduate and master's degrees in accounting at BYU in 2008. He is a licensed CPA in the state of Colorado.
Professor Pierce teaches financial reporting to undergraduate accounting majors. He has also taught research seminars to PhD students and chaired committees for doctoral dissertations. He won multiple college and university awards for his teaching while at FSU.
Professor Pierce has broad research interest, including financial reporting and disclosure, capital markets, and accounting for derivatives. His research has been accepted for publication by journals such as The Accounting Review, Management Science, Review of Accounting Studies, Contemporary Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Reporting. In 2026, he won the Outstanding Senior Faculty Research Award for the College of Business at FSU.
